Bedtime Stories for Kids in French

Why bedtime stories can be a great addition to your child's French journey:

Reading before going to sleep has been proven to have huge health benefits. Various studies have shown that reading before bed on a consistent basis enhances your memory and other mental abilities during all stages of life. So whether you’re a kid, a parent, or a grandparent, a great way to keep your mind sharp is to make reading your last activity before hitting the hay.

Following that logic, reading your kids bedtime stories in French or short stories in French can give them a big boost on their journey to mastering the French language. If you can make reading French storybooks to your children at bedtime a part of the daily routine, it will help them to remember French words and phrases immensely. Here are a few of our favourite bedtime stories in French!

This cute French storybook is offered in physical form as well as in an online format, so there’s options to choose from. It tells the story of a young chicken who unfortunately believes everything he reads on the internet, and how he learned how to figure out true from false. It’s a simple story with an important message, especially in the times we live in now. It’s also offered in audio format, so you can read it with your child or listen to it together.

Another lovely tale with a simple but important message, this story follows a big T-Rex who thinks he’s better than everyone else because he’s bigger than them. The much smaller Igor helps to teach Tyranno to be a better dinosaur, and children reading the story will learn important lessons about respecting others no matter the differences between them and their peers. It’s also a digestible allegory for why bullying is bad and kids shouldn’t do it at school or anywhere else.

A bedtime story in French that follows the ups and downs of a friendship between a young raccoon named Monty and his best friend Francois the rabbit. When Monty begins lying, Francois finds out and can no longer trust his pal. It’s then Monty’s job to fix the friendship that he ruined with his lies. It’s a great story with an important moral: lying is bad. It’s also interesting how the author turned the lies into monsters that live inside us, which is another great metaphor.

Louise lives with her mother, who loves to bake. One day, Louise sneaks into her mother’s kitchen without supervision and is transformed into a tiny version of herself. She didn’t realize her mom’s kitchen was magic! This is a great short story in French for intermediate readers that not only helps with language learning but which stimulates the imagination of your child as well.

A classic that most people in the English-speaking world will already know, this entry from the iconic Dr. Seuss is just as fun when it’s a French storybook too. If you think you’re going to miss out on some of Dr. Seuss’ trademark rhyming and cleverness, have no fear, because the translation is done so that you get the same whimsical storytelling you do in English. Since it’s so widely available, it could also be used as a great tool for translation exercises as well!

Another well-known children’s book character Barbare, like Madeleine, was a French-speaking elephant before his stories were translated into English and many other languages. It follows Barbare as he escapes a hunter in the jungle, stumbles upon a city, and eventually brings civilization to his fellow animals. Barbare is always getting into interesting adventures that teach kids important morals and lessons.
